EuroVis 2026 returned, after more than a decade, to the islands of the UK. The historic Nottingham, home of Robin Hood, hosted the 28th Eurographics Conference on Visualization, from June 8 to 12. Two works of our lab were presented at this event. On the one hand, Benjamin Russig presented the full paper “Tubes or Ribbons? Comparing Texture-space Visualization for Multivariate Line Data”. On the other hand, Julián Méndez presented “nev: A Visual Query Tracer and Builder for Declarative Logic Programming on Nemo” as a poster and demo.

Eurovis started in 1990 as the Eurographics Workshop on Visualization in Scientific Computing (ViSC), which later became the joint Eurographics/IEEE Visualization Symposium (VisSym) in 1999. It was renamed to EuroVis in 2005 and became a Eurographics Conference in 2012. This year’s event witnessed presentations on a variety of topics including AI collaboration, decision support, multimodal interactivity, flow visualization, networks and graph drawing, explainable AI, dimensionality reduction, and more.

Our presented works correspond to fruitful collaborations of our lab with our neighboring Chair of Computer Graphics and Visualization, led by Prof. Stefan Gumhold, and with the Knowledge-Based Systems Group, led by Prof. Markus Krötzsch.

Please refer to the information below on our presented works.

In our large lab (APB/2042), visitors explored three interactive demonstrations: the prototype behind our latest CHI publication “Beyond Links”, which investigates new visual representations for multi-view relationships; an immersive Virtual Reality experience that brings data-driven storytelling to life through the metaphor of a basketball court; and the Climate Time Machine, an LLM-powered storytelling application that enables users to explore historical weather data interactively. We also hosted an information booth for the upcoming SciFi-VIS Workshop at IEEE VIS 2026, co-organized by Julián Méndez.

In our small lab (APB/2044), we showcased our DFG-funded tVISt project on data visualization beyond planar displays, featuring a range of unconventional display technologies. Visitors could also experience BacteriaZoom, an Augmented Reality application developed as part of the Bacteriopolis project in collaboration with the Chair of General Microbiology, allowing them to explore a 3D model of a bacterium. At another station we showed the 3D Interactive Operating Room, originally created as an exhibition for the MS Wissenschaft together with the National Center for Tumor Diseases and CeTI, where visitors could interact with virtual medical staff and perform a robot-assisted gallbladder removal. Finally, our interactive tabletop invited guests to try a variety of collaborative and competitive applications.

The event was kicked off by artist Yadegar Asisi and his inspiring keynote, who reflected on technological progress, human perception, and the importance of keeping technology centered on human experience.

We are also delighted to congratulate our graduate Nicola Doyle, who received this year’s Visualistik Award for the best Bachelor’s thesis in Media Computer Science for her thesis “Designing an Engaging Youth-Focused User Interface for an Urban Planning Participation Platform”, supervised by Annett Mitschick and Raimund Dachselt.

Later that day, the Interactive Media Lab presented several projects highlighting research in augmented reality, immersive visualization, and visual analytics.

Nathalie Senechal showcased “Augmented Bacteria – Learning with Augmented Reality“, an educational AR prototype developed in collaboration with the Chair of Microbiology that enriches printed learning materials with interactive virtual content.

Julián Mendez presented “the Nemo Explain Visualizer”, a collaborative project with the Knowledge-based Systems Group for exploring reasoning traces and building queries for the Nemo rule engine. Together with Christian Alrabbaa and Alisa Kovtunova, he also demonstrated “The (Concrete) Evonne and other DL+VIS Tools”, a suite of interactive visualization tools for inspecting Description Logic reasoning and ontologies.

Finally, Timur Gildeev presented “Immersive Data-driven Storytelling”, a Virtual Reality prototype that enables users to explore what-if scenarios through immersive visualizations of environmental and urban sustainability data.

Under the theme “Interaction in Nature, in the Wild, at the Summit,” this newly established conference brought together Human-Computer Interaction researchers from the Alpine region and beyond, hosted at Monte Verità overlooking Lake Maggiore.

Our workshop focused on emerging ergonomic challenges in Extended Reality (XR), such as the physical and cognitive strain introduced by multimodal interaction, as well as other causes of fatigue. It featured engaging breakout sessions in which current issues were discussed and ideas for more sustainable and comfortable XR interaction were developed. The workshop attracted strong interest and provided a lively platform for exchange and collaboration. We are excited about the many insightful discussions and new impulses, and look forward to future developments in this research area.

The 18th annual ACM SIGGRAPH conference on Motion, Interaction and Games (MIG 2025) took place at ETH Zurich in Switzerland, from December 3rd to 5th. Julián Méndez attended the event to present our invited article on “Immersive Data-Driven Storytelling: Scoping an Emerging Field Through the Lenses of Research, Journalism, and Games”.

The MIG 2025 conference program consisted of 15 long and 4 short papers (out of 46 total submissions), 11 posters, and 3 invited papers from journals: 2 from the Computers & Graphics and 1 from Transactions on Computer Graphics & Visualization (TVCG). The program also incorporated several keynotes by influential researchers and industry partners. The single-track conference highlighted advances in mixed reality, avatar representations, rendering, animation, and games at its forefront. As such, our invited TVCG article received a warm welcome from the community and the “Best Student Presentation” award. Topped off with a variety of social events at the heart of Zurich, the event was a wonderful and meaningful time for our representative.
